Hollywood Baby!

For someone that hates early mornings catching a bus at 6.20am in the morning is not going to fun. But it’s all going to be worth it! The bus (plus two changes) will take us to Burbank, a city 12 miles from Downtown LA, and the home of the Disney Studios.

Unlike the Disney Studios theme parks of Paris and Florida the studios in Burbank are real life working studios, which opened in 1940 after the success of Snow White. Being a working studio means that that they are not open to the public but four times a year the D23 club hold tours for it’s members. A bit of Disney magic was definitely in the air for us because one of the days that had a scheduled tour was the very day that I had earmarked for a trip to Hollywood!

D23 is the official Disney Club and membership is available through the US Disney Store website. I went for the Gold level membership, which included four glossy magazines throughout the year and the membership card. Silver level is cheaper as it doesn't include the magazines. There is also now a free membership level but it doesn't include the membership card, which you need to attend events and receive discounts (you do get access to the website though with Disney news and some great looking recipes!).

The tours cost $60 for each person and last 2 and half hours so by 1pm we will be free to travel into Hollywood itself and go star hunting. Despite the slightly scary stories of the tourist trap that is Hollywood Boulevard we can’t miss the walk of fame or the view of the famous Hollywood sign from the Hollywood and Highland Junction. Plus there is a bit of Disney magic to be found here too with the El Capitan Theatre, a Disney owned cinema. I had originally planned lunch at the Disney’s Soda Fountain, which is next door, but it is closed while they change it into a Ghiradelli’s. Very annoying as I had already chosen cheese on toast for my lunch and we're going too early to get our free Ghiradelli chocolate

Our next stop will be the glamorous Rodeo Drive! Supposedly this is where the celebrities really are so we might even spot someone famous. There won’t be much shopping going on except of the window kind but I am hoping to come away with one of the blue boxes from Tiffany & Co. Then to finish our very packed day we will be visiting the Cheesecake Factory on Beverly Hills Drive. This is partly because I love cheesecake and partly because it links to The Big Bang Theory (one of Matt’s favourite shows) as Penny works in the one in Pasadena.

Sadly we will then have to start the long journey home (two and a half hours, two buses) but after all the excitement I think the sit down on the bus will be needed!

We’re all going to the Zoo!

As a zoology graduate I absolutely adore animals and as my local zoo pretty much only has Monkeys I love going to bigger zoos and safari parks. We have one spare day and rather than relax around the hotel, which we should probably do, we are off to San Diego Zoo!

The zoo is over 90 miles away from Anaheim but luckily there are plenty of bus companies, which do joint travel and entry tickets so it is pretty simple to get there. I’m also hoping for some nice scenery along the way as the route is via the coast.

I am beyond excited about seeing pandas, koalas and wombats! Matt is excited mostly because his favourite film, Anchorman, had a big section set in the zoo. He even has an Anchorman t-shirt all ready to wear when we go!

Becci has recently returned from an Adventures by Disney trip 'Scotland: A Brave Adventure' and takes us through her trip and explains that this just wasn't just a trip to Scotland but a retracing of the footsteps of Mark Andrews, and the team from Pixar, as they recreated Scotland for the movie Brave. Without spoiling the show, I am sure that despite the hefty price tag you will end up agreeing with both of us that ABD is something that should be on everyone's bucket list!

Back from the magic

The jet lag has sunk in along with the post Disney blues. Yes folks I am back from my travels to Walt Disney World and what a fun packed trip it was. From meeting friends of new, and old, to new experiences to re-visiting old favourites; the holiday had it all.

Whilst I am not going to share everything with you right now, I hope this will give you a taster of some of the things that are ahead on the next episode of the podcast, episode 43 due out on 16^th September 2013.

Originally I had planned out this holiday to be part parks and part Disney cruise, in fact I had shared some cruise planning with you all when we had the lovely Passporter Moms on the podcast. However due to personal reasons, I decided to cancel the cruise. In its place I added seven nights to the existing post cruise one night at the Art of Animation Resort.

So the plan was set for a pure fourteen days of Disney park hopping. No plans to visit Nasa, Universal or in fact no plans to step off Disney property. So one would think… hmm bet you managed to do every single park ride and attraction – wrong! I still didn’t manage that! Main reason being, well both weeks were incredibly hot and humid and I had some distractions from park time.

The first was meeting and spending the afternoon with Disney former “friend of” Merlin, author, park historian – Jim Korkis. This had to be the highlight of my holiday. We recorded two podcasts, which I can’t wait to share with you.

Another distraction led to my escape off property to Theme Park Connections in Winter Gardens. Now I know many of you know about this amazing treasure trove of Disney goodies but if you don’t – prepare to! When I did get to the parks I made sure I used my time effectively. Day Five

Day five is another park hopping day with the opportunity of extra magic hours at the Magic Kingdom I can’t resist a trip to hopefully get some shots on Main Street without the crowds.

As New Fantasyland has been toured in depth, this morning will start with Haunted Mansion and then Pirates. Unfortunately the Jungle Cruise is closed, insert massive unhappy face right here right now!

Lunch is going to be over at EPCOT and I am trying out Teppan Edo. I have heard really good things about this place and the menu reads really well. Plus it makes really good value on the dining plan as you all know I like to get the highest cost meals to really make the dining plan work! No doubt I will hit some character meet and greets and try to catch some good interactions before walking back to the monorail.

One thing this trip I am also trying to do is eat more at the resorts, especially counter service so today I will be trying out Gasparilla Grill over at the Grand Floridian. I love just sitting in this resort and relaxing and have already eaten in two of their eateries but this will be a new addition. Tonight also sees the first time I will be able to properly see wishes from my favourite personal spot on Main Street.

Bye bye day five!

Day Four

So day four is going to be a look out of the window and see what the weather is doing. I have scheduled a day at blizzard beach, as I have yet to enjoy this fabulous water park. If the weather is good I will be there for opening if not I will just hit Magic Kingdom for an hour or so before going round Downtown Disney for an hour and indulging in a delicious sandwich from the Earl of Sandwich.

Then it will see my first trip to EPCOT and a must will be Spaceship Earth as it is closing for a week refurb so will be cool to see the before and after! No doubt Test Track will keep me occupied for awhile, as another attraction I haven’t seen since it had its refresh and Tron-ification. Again another first is dinner, Garden Grill. I have made this ADR so many trips before and for some strange reason always cancelled. This time I am standing firm and I will be enjoying the twirling restaurant and its family style offering.

How best to end the evening than Illuminations. This is my favourite of the three firework spectaculars at WDW and I have reserved viewing somewhere over by the Morocco pavilion.

So day four is over. The holiday is going far too quickly! 

Day Three

So I am currently in WDW and no doubt happily having a dole whip float as I type! However it set me thinking, what preparations do people make prior to their trips? I know I do quite a bit so I thought, over the next few days, I would share and if I have missed anything, please please please tweet or email me to help fill in the blanks!

An early start as I head over to the Magic Kingdom for a day starting with New Fantasyland. I can't wait to see the changes from twelve months ago. I have tried to avoid all others talk of the refurb and changes to make it feel fresh and new when I visit. As I saw it last time the twin Dumbo spinner had opened, Casey Jr, The Barnstormer and the train station all had opened so there is quite a lot to see. I'm a little unsure of how to attack the attractions. I have optimised a touring plans tour and have their data led attraction schedule so I will see how I fare with that. 

The thing I am looking forward to on day three is the evening meal at Be Our Guest Restaurant. I'm so excited. Will I get the grey stuff or won't I? Will I get to meet the beast, a character I haven't yet met? I cant wait. Whichever wing I end up in I don't mind as later in the holiday I intend to go back and each at the counter service so I can always eat in the other. 

To end day three I have reserved viewing for Wishes. Not sure about whether this will offer a good view or not, but it was part of the deal I got with Disney when I made my reservation so I will see!

Day Two

It has been a tradition to always go to Animal Kingdom so that will be my first stop. 

 

So after several rides on Everest, a safari and a rapid ride it will be off to flame tree BBQ for the most delicious meal of St Louis style ribs mmm. No doubt some pottering around, shopping and admiring the surroundings the call of the bargains will have kicked in so it will be off to the outlets! I hate these shops with a passion but the savings are great though I don't want to spend a long there. It's kinda like a military operation... 

Then I have to visit the Magic Kingdom, caught a boat to the Wilderness Lodge and eat dinner at the Whispering Canyon before heading back to the Kingdom just to soak up the atmosphere. There you have it... day one!

Michelle's Travel Plans

So as I prepare for the start of my journey to WDW it set me thinking, what preparations do people make prior to their trips? What do others endure to get to the magic? I know I do quite a bit of pre-travel preparation so I thought, over the next few days, I would share some plans and if I have missed anything, please please please tweet or email me to help fill in the blanks!

So as I live 4000 miles away from the magic, I have to start with the prospect of a long flight, which those who know me, know I am not a good passenger. So to ease this phobia I travel to the airport the day before, do twilight check in and then it's to the hotel to wish away the time for the next days flight.

This year I have done a DIY package rather than leaving it all to a tour operator. So I booked my flights with Virgin Atlantic and stumped up a massive £2,500 ($3,750) to fly direct in to MCO. I know it sure is a lot of money but it is a direct flight and I have upgraded to fly premium class, just basically because it comes with additional luggage, legroom and usually the ability to get off the plane first and hopefully be one of the first through immigration. Also it is during the UK summer holidays and prices are always at a premium then.

Once at MCO first plan of action is getting the hire car. I always complete online check as it avoids the clerk trying to sell insurances, upgrades and sat navs that I don't want or need. So who is my car hire provider of choice? Well, I booked the car hire ten months in advance and the best price was Alamo. However I was a tad disappointed that following changing a few details on my booking the price jumped up and their clerk told me the price was in $ when in actually was in £. This means I have had a £240 price increase. I obviously wasn't happy and as I type I truly hope the manager in Orlando will review this as he promised but more about this in a later blog/rant!

Makes coffee delicious for $2

So I have been reunited with cases (no I don't send them on the second trip to avoid taking them on monorail), I have the car and the next stop is Walmart. I know it isn't the poshest of places, but I simply refuse to pay $3 for a small bottle of water when I can get 5l for $2. So I stock up on water, mascara (I know random but sooo much cheaper), hazelnut coffee creamer and all the good stuff I love but can't buy in the UK without pay 4x as much.

So It will now probably be around 5pm. I will have been awake 15 hours. Tired. Grumpy. Facing Florida humidity. So best course of action would be to drive to hotel, check in, unpack and collapse. Oh no! As soon as I am unpacked I will be out and straight to the Polynesian Resort to eat at Captain Cooks, then (all crossed) meet up with Ashley from WDW Happy Place podcast. 

So that is the first day... even typing has exhausted me!

Jenni's Path To Disneyland! Part 3

This is the third in a series of blog posts by Jenni Weightman detailing the planning process of her trip to Disneyland.

Getting to the Magic!

As much as I like airports I don’t want to spend my holiday in one so it was time to find transport to the park. LAX is located about 40 minutes away from Disneyland depending on traffic and both Matt and I are way too chicken to rent a car and drive on the other side of the road. I have problems enough knowing which way is left and right without it all being back to front! So that means we need someone else to drive us and as you would expect for a major tourist destination there are loads of choices, some more expensive than others!

An overview of the options and general costs.

Shuttle

 $20 each way or $30 for a return trip per person. Tip $1 per bag each way.

*Grayline (Disneyland express) 

*Super shuttle

*Prime time shuttle

Town Car

For meet and greet with a 4 person Sedan it would be from $175 to $240 return plus 18% tip 

*Execucar 

*DK Livery

Taxi

Flat rate from LAX to Disney $46 plus tip, Return is $122 including tip.

Taxi's will be waiting at the airport then for the return you would need to ring for one as it's actually against the city code for taxis to stop if you try and hail them.

      

Making the decision 

Trip advisor may be the bane of my life. Everytime I go and search for something or somewhere I think looks good a barrage of scary negative reviews come up. Pretty much every option for traveling from the airport has lots of reports of drivers not arriving, buses going the wrong way or missing the hotel and rude taxi drivers. I know that the majority of people that have positive experiences never bother to review stuff (I know I never have!) but it's hard to ignore all the negativity. But after ignoring negative reviews about a café in Oxford the other week and ending up with the most disgusting egg mayonnaise sandwich I have ever seen or eaten in my life I'm even more wary!!

After much deliberation over a nice lunch we decided to go with the Disneyland Express shuttle. So off I went and booked the $30 dollar return journey each for us and then got cold feet and decided to look again at town cars!!!

Hmm, so in an attempt to save money that’s £40 down the drain (no refunds unfortunately) and I was back to square one.

The big problem with the shuttles is the time they take. What should be a 45 minutes journey can take up to 3 hours with waiting for buses, travelling around the airport to the different terminals then visiting all the different hotels before finally arriving at the place you want to be! This would be fine if we were arriving in the morning or afternoon but our flight comes in at 8pm then we have to get through customs (please let it be quicker than the 2 hour queue at MCO last November) and either get the 21.30 or 22.30 shuttle. This means that if we did end up on the last shuttle and it took 3 hours we wouldn't get to the Desert Inn and Suites until 1:30!! Ok I know this is worse case scenario and we are equally likely to get the earlier bus and it only take 1 and a half hours but, arghhh I can't get the horrible version out of my head. 

I've reached the conclusion that when you are spending lots of money on an amazing trip it is not worth saving a tiny amount (in the grand scheme of things) and causing myself big worry and stress in the process.

So it was back to the reviews and price comparison and I have decided to go with DK Livery and book a meet and greet. They do a pretty great deal of $175 flat rate return including a grocery store visit of 20 mins if required. This comes to about £115 and although it is £70 more than the shuttle I think it is worth it for the peace of mind.  And really who doesn't have a dream of seeing their name on one of those boards in the arrivals lounge :).

Mousekeeping

So there’s a week to my Walt Disney World holiday for 2013. I really should be focusing on ironing and packing… though currently my focus is on the conundrum of tipping whilst at Disney.

The tipping situation for us Brits especially may seem a bit confusing as I know if I stay in a hotel in the UK I would never dream of leaving a tip to the room maid and as to tipping wait staff 20% is even more alien. So first I’m going to discuss what I found out about room tipping.

Firstly it is politely called ‘mousekeeping’ and also it is one of age-old customs. However from what I have read it is not necessary to leave a tip, though this is something I have always done. In the past I have left dollars on the bed and been dumbfounded to comeback and still find the dollars on the neatly made bed.

Purplexed I asked the maid, one morning when I was a tad tardy getting off to the parks, she explained that Disney have a very strict policy on staff taking money or property from guest rooms. Therefore she personally said, she would only would ever take cash if in a clearly marked envelope.

So from that time I have always spent the time to make up an envelope and pre-pack them with around $1 per person, per day. Mainly because if I was staying in a resort for 14 days how could I guarantee that it was the same maid each day, this way I reward each day. What are your room tipping habits? Senses Spa

One thing Walt Disney World offers its guests is a wide range of activities, attractions and eateries. However, how many guests actually take time out for a pampering session? 

Back home in the UK this is something I do on a regular basis but I have never considered visiting a spa during my Disney breaks. Maybe 2013 would be the year? 

Check in at Senses Spa. 

This mural was done by Walt Disney Imagineering. It depicts Floridian and Asian themes to represent that the spa is located between the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian Resorts.

Looking at the menu, there are quite a few treatment standards such as massage and facials. However I am a real sucker for a pedicure and they offer a 50 minute treatment, which has a flat rate of $80, and you can chose to add on an additional service; from massage at $30, exfoliation at $45 or water retention treatment at $55. After making my mind up, next there are options on the products to be used; whether I wished to relax, renew or imagine. On top of these rates Disney add a standard 20% gratuity.

So the treatment would set me back $125. As I said I spa treatments, particularly having my toes painted all pretty plus there is nothing like baby soft tootsies when they are pounded on the pavements in  the parks all day!

When I consider that at home I would pay around $60. These figures did slightly freak me out! However when I read reviews and studied pictures I have become very tempted because of all the additional facilities I could make use of. Which are? Well there is the relaxation area pre or post treatment, heated relaxation chairs and then the water therapy and steam rooms. So I think in consideration this rate is about right. There are also a range of drinks and nibbles available.
